"Never Wrong But Not Always Right?"
-Jorge A. Martinez
The purpose of this eportfolio is to show what I have accomplished and improved on regarding my English skills. But I do not consider myself to be the best in the English nor do I think I am good at it. The English subject has always been something I have struggled with. Whether it be developing a thesis, organizing an essay, avoiding grammar errors, or efficiently analyzing text. I have not been confident in my abilities to consider my skills to be at a college level. But as I look back on the work that I have completed in this course and compare it to the work I done in my first year of college, I realize how far I have developed on an academic level.
During my first semester of college I did not have the necessary skills to succeed in course that required these skills that I have now developed. I took History 7B without having took English 1A and struggled massively with completing the work because of it. I had not yet developed text analysis and essay structuring so I did poorly in that course. It required that students taking it had to write two in-class argumentative essays and I had not yet done an essay like that. The outcome was a D level grade for both the essays with affected my grade negatively. This made me realize the starting point on the journey of improvement. So the following semester I registered for courses that would make me better in these skills that needed developing.
Now after taking English 1A, I feel more confident in my abilities to be successful. This course has helped me with the challenges that I previously faced that were made obvious by History 7B. These challenges included, thesis development, essay organization, grammar as well as punctuation errors, and text analysis. Of course, I needed a lot of help to get to the point that I am at now. I had gotten help from my professors, tutors, and fellow peers. They helped me understand and also improve an essay that I needed help with. Helping me build confidence in my writing ability which lead to results and affects work of future courses that will deal with similar things.
This reflection again, shows how much I have improved and what my successes are. I am now confident to write an essay and how to develop it. Of course, one of my greater successes is that I know now how to write an argumentative essay and organize it extremely well. My development has improved and it is shown in my critical thinking essay. Organization and the ability to efficiently analyze text is shown in my argumentative research essay. Overall this class is just one of the many course that took to improve my abilities as a scholar. But I have not yet reached the end of my journey of improvement and hope to continue taking courses that help me improve as much as this one.
